Sikkim in 7 days: Gurudongmar, Lachung, Tsomgo and Pelling
A week covers the best of North, East and West Sikkim: sacred Gurudongmar Lake at over 17,000 ft, Yumthang Valley, Tsomgo Lake and the Kanchenjunga views of Pelling. It is a lot of driving, so pace it with a buffer day if you can.

Day 1
Arrive in Gangtok
NJP / Bagdogra → Gangtok ~120 km · 4–5 h Stay: Gangtok- Drive up via Rangpo; hand over ID copies for permits.
- Evening on MG Marg.
Day 2
Drive to Lachen
Gangtok → Mangan → Chungthang → Lachen ~120 km · 6–7 h Stay: Lachen- Waterfall stops on the North Sikkim highway.
- Early night — Gurudongmar starts before dawn.
Day 3
Gurudongmar Lake, on to Lachung
Lachen → Gurudongmar → Lachen → Lachung Full day · pre-dawn start Stay: Lachung- Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in India, via Thangu.
- Back to Lachen, then on to Lachung via Chungthang.
Day 4
Yumthang Valley, back to Gangtok
Lachung → Yumthang → Gangtok Full day · very early start Stay: Gangtok- Yumthang Valley (and Zero Point if open).
- Return to Gangtok, crossing Toong checkpost before 4 PM.
Day 5
Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir
Gangtok → Tsomgo → Gangtok ~80 km round trip Stay: Gangtok- Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir; Nathula for Indian travellers on open days.
Day 6
Gangtok to Pelling via Ravangla
Gangtok → Ravangla → Pelling ~120 km · 5 h Stay: Pelling- Buddha Park at Ravangla on the way.
- Sunset over the Kanchenjunga range from Pelling.
Day 7
Pelling sights, depart
Pelling → NJP / Bagdogra ~135 km · 5–6 h Stay: —- Early: Pelling Skywalk and Khecheopalri Lake, or Rimbi and Kanchenjunga Falls.
- Drive down to NJP / Bagdogra.
Distances and drive times are approximate — mountain roads are slow and conditions change with weather.
Permits
- Lachen, Gurudongmar, Lachung and Yumthang need a Protected Area Permit via a registered tour operator.
- Gurudongmar is widely reported as not open to foreign nationals — foreigners can swap Day 3 for Lachung/Yumthang.
- North Sikkim vehicles must cross the Toong checkpost by 4 PM; no night driving.
- Tsomgo needs its own permit; Nathula is for Indians only and closed on Mondays.
Tips
- Gurudongmar is above 17,000 ft — start before dawn, go slow, and skip it if anyone has breathing or heart problems.
- Lachen and Gurudongmar reopened in September 2026 after a long closure; confirm the current status before booking.
- Pelling has the clearest Kanchenjunga views on early mornings from October to May.
