Is North Sikkim open? Sikkim road status

Current status of the routes travellers ask about most — North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang, Lachen, Gurudongmar), Tsomgo Lake and Nathula, Zuluk and the Old Silk Route, and NH10 from Siliguri.

Mountain roads in Sikkim can close within hours after rain or snow. Always re-confirm with your tour operator on the day of travel — permits for North Sikkim, Tsomgo–Nathula and Zuluk are issued only when the route is open.

Statuses are updated by the Sikkim.co team from operator and traveller reports.

How to read this page

Open means vehicles with valid permits are moving normally. Restricted means the road is passable with limits — for example one-way traffic, fixed time windows, or tourists allowed only up to a certain point. Closed means the route is blocked or permits are not being issued. No recent update means we have no confirmed report yet — check with an operator.

Why do North Sikkim roads close?

The North Sikkim highway follows the Teesta valley through steep terrain. Monsoon landslides, cloudbursts and winter snow at higher points such as Zero Point and Gurudongmar regularly close sections, and the administration stops issuing permits for affected areas until they reopen.

Can I drive or ride to North Sikkim myself?

In practice, trips to North Sikkim, Tsomgo–Nathula and Zuluk are arranged through government-registered Sikkim tour operators, who get the permits and provide permitted vehicles. Rules for private cars and out-of-state vehicles vary and are under review. See the Sikkim permit guide for who needs which permit, or get free quotes from registered operators.
