About Yuksom - Norbugang Coronation Throne
Yuksom, located in the Geyzing district of Sikkim, is a historic town steeped in cultural and spiritual significance. Its name means “the meeting place of three learned monks,” a tribute to the three lamas—Lhatsun Chembo, Ngadak Chembo, and Karthok Chembo—who played a pivotal role in the town’s history. In 1642 AD, Yuksom became the first capital of Sikkim when Phuntsog Namgyal was crowned as the kingdom’s first Chogyal (king) at the Norbugang Coronation Throne, a site that remains a powerful symbol of Sikkimese heritage. The coronation ceremony marked the foundation of the Sikkimese monarchy, uniting the region under a shared spiritual and political vision.
Adding to its historical charm, Yuksom is home to Dubdi Monastery, the first monastery in Sikkim, established in 1701 by the king himself. Surrounded by pristine forests and majestic mountains, Yuksom offers visitors a tranquil atmosphere where history and nature blend seamlessly. The town’s welcoming community, ancient landmarks, and scenic beauty make it a must-visit destination for those interested in exploring Sikkim’s roots, spirituality, and breathtaking landscapes.
