About PHODONG MONASTERY
Phodong Monastery, also known as Phodang Gompa, holds a significant place in Sikkim’s spiritual and cultural landscape. Established in the early 18th century by Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal, the fourth king of Sikkim, it is a vital center of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the six principal monasteries in the region. For centuries, it has served as a hub for Buddhist learning, meditation, and religious ceremonies, preserving ancient traditions and teachings.
The monastery is celebrated for its exquisite ancient mural paintings and frescos that adorn its walls, reflecting deep spiritual symbolism and artistic mastery. Phodong is also renowned for hosting the annual Kagyed Dance Festival, held on the 28th and 29th days of the 10th Tibetan month, usually in December. During this vibrant festival, monks perform traditional Chaam dances dressed in elaborate costumes and masks, enacting stories that symbolize the victory of good over evil, and invoking blessings for the community.
Set amidst serene surroundings with panoramic views of the Himalayas, Phodong Monastery offers visitors a peaceful retreat where spirituality and cultural heritage come alive. It remains a vital pilgrimage site for devotees and a fascinating destination for tourists seeking to experience Sikkim’s rich Buddhist legacy.
