About Dubdi Monastary
Dubdi Monastery, founded in 1701 by the first Chogyal of Sikkim, is the oldest and most revered monastery in the state, central to the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Preserved as a national monument by the Archaeological Survey of India, this two-story stone structure features intricate interior artwork and houses sacred scriptures, statues, and images of founding lamas, making it a vital symbol of Sikkim’s rich Buddhist heritage.
Perched atop a hill near Yuksom, the monastery is accessible via a scenic hour-long uphill trek through dense forests, offering visitors a peaceful journey steeped in spirituality and natural beauty. Along the path, ancient chortens and remnants of crumbling stone walls evoke the legacy of the Sikkimese kingdom’s founding and the three Tibetan lamas who introduced Buddhism to the region.
The serene surroundings, combined with the monastery’s historical and religious significance, create a timeless atmosphere that invites reflection and reverence. Dubdi Monastery stands not only as a spiritual retreat but also as a living testament to Sikkim’s cultural awakening and enduring Buddhist traditions.
