About Aritar Lake
Aritar Lake, also known as Lampokhari, is one of the oldest natural lakes in Sikkim, nestled in the tranquil town of Aritar in East Sikkim at an elevation of around 4,600 feet. The name “Lampokhari” comes from Nepali—“Lam” meaning long and “Pokhari” meaning lake—aptly describing its unique elongated shape, stretching approximately 1,120 feet in length and 240 feet in width. Steeped in rich history and cultural significance, the lake holds a sacred place among the indigenous Lepcha community, who consider it spiritually important. Along its serene banks lies a small shrine dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava, a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism, further enhancing its religious aura. Beyond its spiritual importance, Aritar Lake offers visitors a peaceful retreat with boating facilities, surrounded by lush greenery and stunning natural beauty. This blend of cultural heritage and scenic tranquility makes Aritar Lake a cherished ecological and spiritual landmark in Sikkim.
